What is Fioricet (Apap/Butalbital/Caffeine)?
Acetaminophen is a pain reliever and fever reducer.
Butalbital is in a group of drugs called barbiturates. It relaxes muscle contractions involved in a tension headache.
Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant. It relaxes muscle contractions in blood vessels to improve blood flow.
The combination of acetaminophen, butalbital, and caffeine is used to treat tension headaches that are caused by muscle contractions.
Acetaminophen, butalbital, and caffeine may also be used for other purposes not listed in this medication guide.
Fioricet and headahces I have been taking fioricet and fioricet w/cod for approximately 7 years. Depending on how severe the headaches become, I alternate the 2 drugs, never combining them. I feel like the fioricet works bests for the tension headahces (sometimes constant) and the fioricet w/codeine works great for the cluster headache that can last for days. My neurologist put me on this after all the tests he did, discovered the I have an “ocipital” nerve damaged at the base of my skull, which resulted in the tension headaches, and leaves my left eye “droopy”. I have also been getting ocipital nerve blocking injection every 3 weeks for about 1 and 1/2 years. It is a long lasting cortisone and xylocaine preperation. The injections go directly into the back of the scalp, where the nerve is located and inflammed to the point of being blocked. The nerve control the eye movement , thus resulting in the droopy eye. I will go to all extremes to keep these headaches under control, as they can take over your life, if you allow them. As far as the “droopy” eye, well it just stays droopy for 1-2 days even after the headache has eased. This medication does work wonders, and if I take ibuprofen 800, it helps a great deal with the inflammation also……I could not survive an episode of days of headaches without the fioricet and fioricet w/cod…..;-)
Fioricet is indicated for the treatment of complex and muscle contraction headaches. It is also commonly prescribed for migraines although it is not FDA indicated for this use. The usual adult dose is 1-2 tablets every four hours as needed, not exceeding six tablets in a 24 hour period.
Butalbital has generalized depressant effect on central nervous system and, in very high doses, has peripheral effects. Acetaminophen has analgesic and antipyretic effects; its analgesic effects may be mediated through inhibition of prostaglandin synthetase enzyme complex. Caffeine is thought to produce constriction of cerebral blood vessels.
Butalbital has a half-life of about 35 hours. Acetaminophen has a half-life of about 1.25 to 3 hours, but may be increased by liver damage and after an overdose. Caffeine has a half-life of about 3 hours.
When you take butalbital for a long time, your body may get used to it so that larger amounts are needed to produce the same effects. This is called tolerance to the medicine. Also, butalbital may become habit-forming (causing mental or physical dependence) when it is used for a long time or in large doses. Physical dependence may lead to withdrawal side effects when you stop taking the medicine. In patients who get headaches, the first symptom of withdrawal may be new (rebound) headaches.
Some butalbital and acetaminophen combinations also contain caffeine. Caffeine may help to relieve headaches. However, caffeine can also cause physical dependence when it is used for a long time. This may lead to withdrawal (rebound) headaches when you stop taking it.
Butalbital and acetaminophen combination may also be used for other kinds of headaches or other kinds of pain as determined by your doctor.
These medicines are available only with your doctor’s prescription.
